The Summer That Wasn't

Summer 2010 will probably go down in history as one of the weakest movie seasons in years. No movie this summer came close to near-perfect cinematic experience, however Toy Story 3 has proven to be one of the best family films of the year. The story line was great and it had quite a few heartwarming moments. Only the heartless wouldn't feel a tear by the end.
Prince of Persia was a box office dud. Perhaps the current situation in the Middle East was partially responsible for the complete flop. I personally thought the film was an expert portrayal of video game events, sticking very close to original Sands of Time storyline and employing a variety of awesome camera techniques. The set and costume designs were fantastic and lent an epic feel. Hopefully, more movie goers will give it a chance, as it is as fantastic as any of the other 'swords and sands' epics from the past.
Comic book movies were surprisingly sparse this year. With one superhero (the famed Robert Downey Jr.) leading the charge, you would think the movie would be great. Iron Man 2 was a surefire hit until people actually saw the film. I loved the first movie, but felt the sequel fell far short of what we've come to expect from Marvel films. I'm sorry, but two action scenes are not enough for a two hour comic book extravaganza! And the finale was over before it really began. I was very disappointed. Iron Man 2 was not a complete dud, however. The armor and graphics in the movie look amazing. Perhaps with a little less exposition and an extra action scene or three this movie could have been in the same league as Spiderman 2 and The Dark Knight.
The real surprise of the summer, Inception, is a slick action thriller that has people entering dreams to steal secrets. It was a super-smart, thought-provoking film that you must see at least twice to truly appreciate the ending. Christopher Nolan should now be able join the ranks of other famous directors and be known as a unique visionary.
We also saw a surge of classic 80s entertainment with the A Team and Karate Kid. Both movies had great movies, but neither surpassed the original source material The A Team does feature one of the most over-the-top action scenes of the year. It certainly wasn't probable, but it was cool. The Karate Kid's fight scenes were surprisingly brutal for a PG film and left you feeling sorry for Jayden Smith's character.

However, decide for yourself. We will have each of these films in circulation upon their release dates.
